Julie Mehretu — Retrospective

Whitney Museum of American Art, New York

Installation view of Julie Mehretu (Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, March 24-August 8, 2021). From left to right: Mogamma (A Painting in Four Parts) Part 1, 2012; Stadia II, 2004. Photograph by Ron Amstutz

Mehretu’s paintings are storms of mark-making, history, and motion. You can almost hear them—city plans, protest chants, shifting weather. Across her retrospective, the surface becomes a map of energy: dense, charged, and always in flux.
